Why would using onboard batteries to power an electric launch vehicle be impractical?

Answer

The mass of the batteries required to provide even a short duration of required thrust would greatly exceed the mass of the payload itself.

For an electric system to match the thrust needed for liftoff, even for a minute, the energy storage device required would be so massive that the vehicle could no longer lift that combined weight off the launchpad.
