The current operational phase utilizing the Perseverance rover is focused on initial detection and collection. The discoveries made so far primarily fall into the first two tiers of confidence: the detection of simple Organic Molecules (Low confirmation) and the identification of rock structures or Textures/Morphology resembling microbial remains (Medium confirmation). While these findings are highly encouraging, they are preliminary because they can potentially be explained by non-biological activity or require higher-resolution techniques unavailable to the rover. The ultimate goal of identifying the most promising samples is to ensure they meet the high-confidence standard achievable only after detailed Isotopic Ratio analysis back on Earth.
